CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The General Computer Lab Coordinator is responsible for the effective management, maintenance, and support of student and staff computer laboratories across the University.
The position ensures that computer labs remain functional, secure, and aligned with institutional ICT standards to support teaching, learning, and research.


This includes overseeing daily operations, coordinating lab assistants, implementing software and hardware updates, maintaining asset registers, and ensuring a high-quality user experience.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Provides ICT support to students

To manage the Student Assistants

To oversee daily operations of all general computer labs, ensuring accessibility, uptime, and technical readiness.

To coordinate lab usage schedules, access control, and security in collaboration with Protection Services and Faculty representatives.

To Log CRM cases for Hardware and software issues

To assist with student pins and passwords.

To manage the installation, configuration, and maintenance of hardware, operating systems, and application software in Computer Lab

To ensure timely resolution of technical faults logged through the ICT Service Desk.

To maintain compliance with cybersecurity and software licensing requirements.

To provide frontline ICT support to students and academic staff within the labs.

To Train and supervise student lab assistants to ensure effective service delivery and adherence to ICT policies.

To Facilitate user awareness on acceptable use, digital literacy, and responsible computing.

To Maintain an accurate inventory of lab equipment and software.

To Ensure adherence to ICT asset management policies, including equipment lifecycle replacement and audit compliance.

To Ensure safe working conditions in labs in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards.

To Implement energy-efficient and sustainable ICT practices where possible.

To Prepare operational and incident reports for ICT management.

Key Skills and Competencies

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills, with experience in interviewing, supervision, and team coordination.
  • Solid knowledge of information security, PC software/hardware, Windows and macOS environments, networking, Active Directory, and lab management tools (Deep Freeze, Delpro, Papercut, Veralab).
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving abilities, including conceptual thinking and system integration.
  • Proven organisational skills, able to manage multiple labs, meet deadlines, and operate under pressure.
  • Experience managing budgets and understanding university (NMU/FTC) requirements and policies.
  • Focused on continuous improvement and addressing client needs, with a commitment to innovation in ICT service delivery.
 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  •  Information Technology Qualification will be an added advantage.
  • Two to five years relevant experience.
