CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The Department of Economics is seeking an academic leader in learning and teaching, research and engagement within the discipline of Economics at Nelson Mandela University. At Professor level, the position entails being available to lead, mentor early career academics, supervise up to doctoral level, hosting post-doctoral fellows, initiate and lead research projects (grant based or commissioned), as well as initiating internationalisation and engagement activities through sustainable partnerships.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

  • Facilitate learning and teaching of Economics at all levels
  • Co-ordinate and initiate new academic programmes and curriculum renewal
  • Lead research teams on quality and transformative research, innovation and internationalisation initiatives
  • Leadership of academic unit/division and programmes
  • Efficient academic administration as required by Head of Department.
  • Capacity to work well with the other members of the Department, School and Faculty.
  • Mentorship of emerging and early career academics
  • Generate third stream income and lead in economic policy discussions
  • Attract and supervise postgraduate students

  • In depth knowledge of the theory and application of the discipline

  • Ability to create knowledge by virtue of published research in peer-reviewed journals, scholarly books and other texts

REQUIREMENTS

 

The candidate:

  • Must be in possession of a doctoral degree in Economics
  • Must have a minimum of 10 years of teaching and learning experience at tertiary level
  • Has served as an Associate Professor/ equivalent rank for at least 2 years
  • Must have demonstrable experience in lecturing at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, especially in the areas of Advanced Macroeconomics, Advanced Microeconomics and Economic Impact Assessment
  • Must have demonstratable evidence of curriculum development experience
  • Must have proof of securing and managing research grants and other research initiatives, and participation in community engagement initiatives and projects.
  • Demonstratable research standing at national and international level
  • Minimum 3 years of holding academic leadership with demonstrable achievements
  • Must have a proven track record of sustained publication record for journal articles in refereed and DHET accredited journals, and/or book chapters and have presented research findings at conferences
  • Must have a track record of successful supervision of Masters and Doctoral students
